A Vulva Masterclass on Aftercare

Is it a little depressing that most of us have been misnaming our vulvas as vaginas for decades? Yes

Does it bring me hope to know that this is changing over time? Absolutely.

Welcome to my vulva masterclass, beautiful souls! In today's session, we’re gonna talk all about our clean-up ritual, or what I like to call our afterglow aftercare, after sex and self-pleasure.

I’m going to be freaking for real with y’all: I don’t always clean up after I pleasure myself. Sometimes I’m so blissfully spent, my energy is so depleted, or my body is so peaceful that I simply don’t feel like moving or cleaning up my lady juices.

But, my gorgeous lovies, that is something I am actively working on changing, and so I’m writing this as an accountability letter to myself and to you!

My vulva is one of the most important things to me, and her health is equally as important. It’s up to me to prove that to her.

Here's why making that clean-up a priority is non-negotiable for our health and pleasure:

Why Aftercare is Essential for Your Vulva Health

  • To Combat Bacteria & Reduce Infection Risk: During sex or self-pleasure, friction and contact can introduce bacteria to the urethra (aka the place where your pee comes out) and the external folds of the vulva. This can potentially lead to some serious infections.

  • Maintain Your pH Balance: If you happen to have sex with men, bodily fluids like semen can have a higher pH than your naturally acidic vagina. This also applies to wlw (women loving women) sex if your PH is not aligned.  While your vagina (your inner workings) is a self-cleaning goddess, leftover residue on the vulva can disrupt the delicate microflora, making you more prone to irritation, bacterial overgrowth, and yeast infections.

  • Wash Away Lubricants and Residue: Any lubricants, oils, or even shared toys can leave residue that can harbor bacteria if not gently wiped away.

  • Promote Overall Wellness: Treating your intimate area with care after a powerful energy exchange is a foundational act of self-love and self care.

My New Accountability List: The Afterglow Ritual

I came up with a list of ways I’m going to hold myself accountable and reframe my mind to remember that the clean-up is an essential and fun part of aftercare.

If you have a lover, you can also incorporate these acts into your love ceremony as a way of showing each other care and tenderness after exchanging such powerful energy.

1. Use the Bathroom (The UTI Flusher!)

Urinating after sex and self-pleasure is crucial, especially for people with a vulva. The friction from the activity can push bacteria toward the urethra. Peeing within 30 minutes acts like a natural flush, washing away potential infection-causing bacteria (like E. coli) and significantly lowering your risk of getting a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

2. Keep Besties Wipes by My Bedside (The Quick & Gentle Cleanse)

Instead of trekking to the bathroom when I'm spent, I’m keeping Besties Prebiotic + Probiotic Wipes right on my nightstand. Bonus: Besties is an incredible Black-owned and women-owned brand! Their wipes are designed for your intimate area but they can also be enjoyed on your entire body. They’re vegan and are infused with pre and probiotics which makes them pH-balanced, so they won't irritate your delicate skin. Use them to gently wipe the external vulva from front to back. Important Note: They are cruelty free, biodegradable and flushable, so you can flush them on your next trip to the bathroom.

3. Drink Water and Hydrate (Replenish & Flush)

Sexual activity is a workout! You're sweating and expending energy. Drinking a full glass of water helps to rehydrate your body and encourages you to urinate again later, boosting that UTI-flushing power.

4. Gentle External Rinse (Water is the Gold Standard)

If you have the energy, a quick, gentle rinse of the external vulva with warm water is best. The vagina (again, your inner working) is self-cleaning, so never use soap internally! For your vulva, all you need to do is use your hand and water! No harsh scrubbing and stay the heck away from fragranced soaps.

5. Freshen Your Sheets (Your Pleasure Sanctuary)

A quick change of the top sheet, or even just replacing the towel you laid down beforehand, makes all the difference in making your bed feel like the fresh, clean sanctuary you deserve for cuddling and rest.

Does this list not make you feel so excited for your next self pleasure session?

When I think of self-pleasure as a self-care ritual, it helps me tend to myself more gently and I become committed to exploring myself with more intention.

It takes a lot to break out of our old habits, rushing ourselves, judging ourselves, not tending to ourselves but that rushing can deepen our relationships with shame and distance our relationships with ourselves and our bodies.

When we connect with our vulvas after a grand pleasure session, we’re not only showing ourselves that we’re worthy of our own touch even after pleasure, but we’re tending to our sensitive, beautiful, juicy organs and are cementing a conscious, loving relationship with our own body.
