How To Masturbate To Music

QUICK NOTE: I absolutely HATE the word masturbation (you can learn the true meaning of the word HERE) but for the sake of using terms that feel familiar, I have decided to use the word Masturbation throughout this article.

My hope is to one day live in a world where we can reclaim and redefine the meaning of a lot of the words that we use in passing, that were originally rooted in shame.

But when it comes to dismantling shame, it’s important that we take things one day at a time.

Okay, okay that’s enough of my Tiya Talk.

Let’s dive in shall we?

My name is Love Atiya and I went viral online for talking about how much I love to pleasure myself to music.

How did I discover this?

Well…

One day, I was pleasuring myself to my favorite porn video.

It was a video I knew like the back of my hand and I was HIGHLY attracted to the person I was getting off to.

I began my pleasure practice, deeply focusing on what the person in the video was probably feeling and when I reached my climax… it was the most anxiety provoking shit I had experienced.

My biggest takeaway was that I was so distracted by what I was watching and so focused on matching my climax to the woman in the video that I simply wasn’t present with my own body and my own sensations!

My beautiful neurodivergent mind couldn’t process multiple forms of stimulation at one time (visual, audio, touch and two of those really centered around someone else’s experience!)

I was so freaking frustrated.

Normally I loved to try to climax with the person I was watching on screen but this night it just didn’t feel….right?

And I was still very very horny.

So, I closed my laptop, pulled out my phone and began to play a song from one of my favorite artists at the time.

I closed my eyes, swayed my pelvis in a whining motion, sang a few of the words (fun fact: hearing my own voice turns on) & boom.

I had a deep, beautiful, fully present and very embodied orgasm.

I was soooooo thankful. I felt like I’d come back home to myself but using my generic sex playlist didn’t really do it for me the next time I tried to recreate this experience.

Right when I found myself getting into a rhythm I have to skip 5 songs to find one I truly loved.

It also didn’t help that the original playlist I was listening to unfortunately had many ignorant asshole artists featured on there (… basically all the guys we used to love and then found out they were creepy.)

Talk about a mood ruiner?

Thankfully though, this inconvenience inspired me to become a bit more intentional.

So I went through and did an audit on my sex playlist while also creating a playlist for foreplay & my moments of partnerless intimacy (seriously it makes a difference.)

The self pleasure playlist: features music from my favorite artists and tends to have a slower tempo, lots of bass that I can feel throughout my body & frequencies that calm my nervous system.

My foreplay playlist: features music that feels enticing and soothing. Many of the songs feel like foreplay in their own right and are a bit less intense than the ones on my sex playlist.

My sex playlist: features music that consists of many different tempos. Each song set a mood for a new moment. Some songs are more lyric heavy while other songs give more of a feeling through their beats and cadence.

One quick note: I am currently an Apple Music kinda girl (this is NOT an endorsement) this is just the platform that I created the playlist on.

This doesn’t mean you cannot access the music, it just means if you don’t have Apple Music you may have to get a little creative.

What actually makes this practice so powerful?

As you can see from my experience this is not just about “putting on a song and touching yourself.”

It’s actually about using music as a doorway back into your body.

Music bypasses the thinking mind. It goes straight into sensation. Which means instead of analyzing your body, judging your body, or trying to “perform” pleasure… you get to feel it.

And that’s the whole point!!! For me, before I used music as a stimuli for pleasuring myself I was so focused on what was happening on the screen, I was literally distracted from my own pleasure.

Here’s how I personally like to do it (but remember it’s your pleasure practice and you can absolutely make this your own):

First, when it comes to my pleasure I try to be very intentional to not rush into anything.

I start off with a song that matches the version of me I want to meet in that moment. Sometimes it’s soft and slow. Sometimes it’s dripping in bass. Sometimes it’s emotional as hell and I just want to feel everything I’ve been holding.

Then I let my body lead.

Sometimes that looks like just breathing and placing a hand on my chest or belly first. Sometimes it looks like dancing fully clothed before anything else even happens. Sometimes it’s literally just me laying there letting the music move through me until something inside me says “okay… now.”

And here’s something I want to gently and clearly remind you of is:

You don’t owe anyone a performance of pleasure. Not even yourself.

One of the biggest shifts music creates is removing the pressure to “get somewhere.”

Because music is already happening. You’re already inside of it. There’s nothing to achieve.

This is the perfect practice for people like me who truly require a little extra focus & help staying in the moment.

Also… your voice is part of the instrument.

Remember when I told you the sound of my own voice literally turns me on? There’s a science to that!

If you want to moan, hum, whisper lyrics, breathe louder, sing a little, please by all means, do it and do it without judgement.

Your voice and primal sounds literally wakes up more sensation in the body.

Plus your nervous system literally responds to your own expression. So you are not being “too much.” You are actually turning yourself on in the most literal way.

Another thing I love to do is build different playlists for different emotional states:

  • Soft healing days when I want to feel safe in my body

  • Sensual, slow burn energy when I want to stretch pleasure out

  • Confident “I love myself and I know it” energy

  • And yes… the “I need to get out of my head immediately” playlist

Because your nervous system doesn’t experience all pleasure the same way. Different soundscapes create different pathways in the body.

And over time, your body starts to recognize: “Oh… this song means I get to come home to myself.”

And that’s really what this whole journey is about.

So I invite you to feel free to create your own personal pleasure playlists for each and every mood and sensation you’re craving in each moment.

Think of this as practice for returning to your own rhythm without interruption, without shame, without someone else’s gaze shaping your experience.

If you’ve only ever experienced pleasure through performance, through porn, through rushing, through dissociation, or through trying to “get it right”… music can absolutely be one of the safest ways to slowly unlearn that.

I personally think that’s because it meets you where you are with no pressure and no expectation. Just sound and body.

Please give it a go and let me know what you think. Curate your own sound world or enjoy the playlists that I’ve created. Let yourself experiment. Let it be awkward. Let it be sensual. Let it be nothing and everything at once.

And remember, pleasure is not a performance you owe. It is a language your body already speaks. You’re just learning how to listen.

I love you to the moon and beyond my loves.
