Is Turmeric Good For Your Skin?

Let’s just jump right into the answer which is ABSOLUTELY yes yes yes.

In the world of Ethereal by Love Atiya, Turmeric is a SUPER ROOT!

In 2019 after I found out that the Bentonite Clay (also known as indian healing clay) that I was buying for myself from Walmart had lead in it I had to immediately find an alternative.

That’s when I learned about the magic of turmeric.

What are the healing benefits of using turmeric topically?

Turmeric:

  • Helps brighten dark spots

  • Helps heal skin wounds

  • Helps with certain skin conditions (such as psoriasis, scabies, eczema, alopecia & lichen planus

  • Helps reduce blemishes

  • Helps fade skin and acne scars

  • Contributes to a natural glow

  • Has Anti-aging properties

  • Moisturises dry skin

  • Helps treat stretch marks

  • & Helps protect against environmental damage

Why does turmeric work so well?:

The active ingredient in turmeric is a natural compound called Curcumin, which has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is rich in phytonutrients that may protect the body by neutralizing free radicals (pollution, sunlight) and shielding the cells from damage.

Turmeric/Curcumin is:

  • Anti inflammatory (reduces inflammation)

  • Antimicrobial & Antiviral (limiting the replication of many different fungi, bacteria and viruses)

  • Antiseptic (used for healing cuts, burns, and bruises, and as an antibacterial agent in many countries in south asia)

  • Antibacterial (fights bacteria)

When I first started using turmeric to heal my hyperpigmentation I remember receiving compliments from my friends, strangers on the street and even the man who worked at the post office down the street!

The thing no one told me was that the more I used raw turmeric the more orange I'd become… LITERALLY.

I did research and learned that milk and honey could remove the stain but because I’m vegan I preferred to use a more plant and earth friendly alternative. I tried using plant based milks and although they kind of helped I knew I needed another alternative.

Because my first product for my self care line Ethereal by Love Atiya included essential oils I remember learning that essential oils needed to be used with a carrier oil because they were so potent!

I took this same method and used it with turmeric but instead of a carrier oil I decided to use a carrier CLAY and that is where the oh so wonderful Rhassoul Clay came in.

I was able to heal my hyperpigmentation on my own with my all natural handmade product and any time stress induced acne or hormonal acne approached and I’d accidentally scar I knew I’d have my Rhassoul Clay & Turmeric Healing Mask to help save the day.

I have never been more in love with my skin and I hope that my products can do the same for you.
